Air coupled ultrasonic detection of surface defects in food cans

چکیده
In this paper we describe an ultrasonic inspection system used for detection of surface defects in food cans. The system operates in pulse-echo mode and analyzes the 220 kHz ultrasonic signal backscattered by the object. The classification of samples into valid or defective is achieved with χ statistics and the k-nearest neighbour method, applied to features computed from the envelope of the ultrasonic echo. The performance of the system is demonstrated empirically in the detection of the presence of the pull tab on the removable lid of easy-open food cans, in a production line. It is found that three factors limit the performance of the classification: the misalignment of the samples, their separation of the ultrasonic transducer, and the vibration of the conveyor belt. When these factors are controlled, classification success rates between 94 and 99 % are achieved.

Investigation of Accurate Imaging of the Defects in Composite Materials Using Ultrasonic Air-coupled Technique
The modern aircrafts are built using various composite materials such as carbon/glass fibre reinforced plastics, GLARE and honeycombs. Manufacturing technologies of composite materials are complicated and include many stages. Small deviations from the technology parameters may cause relatively small defects, but influence of these defects on a total strength of a construction may be essential. ...

Ultrasonic testing using couplants is most popular technique for non destructive testing of solid materials. In the most non – destructive evaluation tasks such as investigation of materials whose properties may be changed by liquid contact this technique can not be used. Use of contact technique can be restricted for complex geometry structures. Also, liquid couplants cannot be used when mater...

The results of NDE and material characterization with mode conversion of air-coupled ultrasound into plate and surface waves in solids are reported. Singleand both-sided configurations of efficient slanted wave conversion are developed and tested for various materials. An alternative option is based on the excitation of cylindrical plate and surface waves by a focused air-coupled beam incident ...
